What We Do

NINA’s top priorities are:   Home Ownership    Public Safety     Education    Economic Development

Home Ownership

Asylum Hill’s rate of homeownership is currently 9%, one of the lowest in the country. NINA is working to create new homeownership opportunities by providing sustainable, affordable homes. NINA is currently restoring six historic distinctive properties which we will sell for between $150,000-$250,000.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for:

  • first-time homeowners,
  • professionals looking to eliminate their communte to downtown Hartford, and
  • all those who appreciate fine architecture

Public Safety

Asylum Hill is an urban neighborhood and public safety is taken very seriously by NINA and neighborhood residents.

NINA is a strong supporter of community policing. We schedule regular meetings between police officers, residents and area businesses to discuss neighborhood hotspots and safety concerns.

NINA has also brought the Cops-N-Kids program to Asylum Hill. This nationally celebrated program provides donated books to police officers which they give to children while on patrol. The program creates positive interactions between police officers and children, and helps to improve low rates of literacy that later lead to crime.

EducationAsylum Hill Boys & Girls Club

NINA seeks to improve the quality of education at Asylum Hill schools. The successful implementation of our homeownership programs assist our educational goals. By stabilizing residency in the neighborhood, we will reduce the transience of the school-aged population, many of whom move frequently to rental apartments in other neighborhoods. Asylum Hill is home to several schools, including:

  • West Middle Elementary School
  • Quirk Middle School
  • Hartford Public High School
  • Classical Magnet School

Economic Development

More homeowners, safer streets, and better schools lead to opportunities for new business. NINA encourages and advises potential small business owners in Asylum Hill in order to create more restaurants, shops and services for Asylum Hill residents and the employees of local organizations.
