Asylum Hill Spring Walking Tour and Open House was a Success! Over 125 people came out in sun and rain to tour seven homes and three gardens on May 19th and 20th. We received rave reviews from participants and plan on hosting another tour of our new homes on Sargeant Street in 2008. Stay posted and thank you to everyone who came out. The Walking Tour was guided by members of the NINA and the Hartford Preservation Alliance. Free Health & Safety Home Repairs for Local Residents NINA is collaborating with Rebuilding Together Hartford and AARP to provide renovations and repairs to Asylum Hill residents age 50+. Homeowners must be income eligible. For more information on how to receive these services or help with the project, please contact either Julianne Lugo at 860-558-3803 or Greg Secord at 860-757-9428. Streetscape Improvements Underway Construction is complete on the North side of Ashley Street. New vintage streetlights, sidewalks, and historic date markers now line what has been labeled by the mayor as a Pride Block in Hartford. Take a stroll down Ashley Street and appreciate Hartford's heritage. YouthBuild & NINA Team UpIn order to facilitate the educational development of Hartford youth, this Spring NINA will work together with Co-opportunitiy, Inc.'s YouthBuild program. By participating in the home renovations to be conducted this Spring, students will receive hands-on-training for educational and job training purposes. Ultimately, this experience will help disadvantaged youth find work placement after program completion. Victorian Lady on HGTV Formerly 47 Sigourney Street, the move of the Victorian Lady to 21 Ashley Street drew the attention of local and national media. In August, HGTV will air a special on the incredible move of this 1890 home to its new location in Asylum Hill. Click here to view the clip online. Cutting EdgePublic Safety Measures Asylum Hill is now home to two wireless security cameras, pointed at public locations to deter crime and quality of life issues. NINA is working with the Hartford Police to ensure these cameras are positioned in areas of high activity, as well as monitored in the event of a crime. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Harford Police Department. |
